Best ways to send files by email on a Mac

The right method depends on the job. For files you send to the same people repeatedly, AutoMailSender is fastest — a drag becomes a sent email to preset recipients (free for 25 emails, then a one-time €9.99). For very large files, an iCloud Mail Drop link or WeTransfer beats a raw attachment. For a normal one-off email, Apple Mail is all you need.

How each method works

Apple Mail attachment — The default, and perfectly good for a one-off. Attach the file, address the message, send. iCloud Mail Drop — When a file is too big to attach, Mail on iCloud can send it as a link instead, hosted by Apple for a limited time. Great for large files without leaving your normal email flow. It still involves a compose window, so it's about size, not speed.

WeTransfer — A cloud service with a free tier for sending large files as a download link. Excellent when the file is far too big to email and the recipient just needs to grab it. The trade-off is that the file passes through a third-party cloud rather than staying on your Mac and your own account.

Drag a file onto Mail in the Dock — A native shortcut: drop a file on the Mail icon and it starts a new message with the file attached. Quick for a single send, but it still opens a compose window and you address it yourself each time.

Which should you use?

Repeat sends to fixed people: AutoMailSender. A normal one-off email: Apple Mail, or the Dock drag. A file too big to attach: iCloud Mail Drop if you're on iCloud Mail, otherwise WeTransfer for a shareable link.
